  17. million; in Manhattan. In 1983, Stewart, 25, was arrested for
  18. scrawling graffiti in a subway, hog-tied and taken to a
  19. hospital, where he died 13 days later. The case, which prompted
  20. charges of racism and brutality, attracted nationwide
  21. attention.
